LeBron James rookie card value by grade

Grade decides almost everything for this card, so values are given as ranges by tier rather than a single price. Common in every grade except true Gem Mint; the real scarcity lives in the 1st Edition, Chrome refractors, and the Exquisite RPA.

Estimated value by grade for the 2003-04 Topps #221.
Condition Estimated value
Raw (ungraded) Recent raw sales tracked around $150 to $230 by SportsCardsPro and Sports Card Investor. Raw 1st Edition copies sell far higher and should not be confused with base. $100 – $300
PSA 8 Sports Card Investor listed PSA 8 near $1,000; the range is widened because recent comps were inconsistent across sources. $300 – $1,000
PSA 9 eBay comps in PSA's price database ranged from about $420 in late 2025 to roughly $1,900 estimated by Sports Card Investor; the range reflects that real spread. $400 – $2,000
PSA 10 Realized 2025 sales clustered around $2,000 to $3,500 while marketplace asks reached $7,500 to $10,000; the pandemic-era peak hit $15,000+. Check current comps before acting. $2,000 – $10,000

Values last checked: July 16, 2026.

Record / notable sale $5.2 million (a different card: the 2003-04 Exquisite Rookie Patch Autograph /23, BGS 9, private sale) (April 2021, PWCC Marketplace).

Is this really the rookie card?

LeBron's rookie year is uncontested: 2003-04 across all major brands. The Topps #221 is the accessible, mass-produced entry point; a scarcer 1st Edition parallel of the same number commands a real premium. The true grail is a different card entirely: the 2003-04 Upper Deck Exquisite Rookie Patch Autograph, which has sold for millions and lives in another price universe.

Key versions and parallels

  • 2003-04 Topps #221 1st Edition parallel, under 900 PSA-graded copies versus roughly 22,000+ for base
  • 2003-04 Topps Chrome #111 and its refractors, the premium chrome version of this rookie class
  • 2003-04 Upper Deck Exquisite Rookie Patch Autograph, the multi-million dollar grail (a separate card, not a parallel of this one)

How rare is it, really?

Common in every grade except true Gem Mint; the real scarcity lives in the 1st Edition, Chrome refractors, and the Exquisite RPA.

  • Print run: A mass-market flagship product with a large print run; PSA alone has graded roughly 22,000+ copies of the standard version
  • Graded population: PSA population data shows the base #221 in the tens of thousands across all grades, versus fewer than 900 total PSA-graded copies of the 1st Edition variant

History

LeBron James entered the 2003 NBA Draft as the most hyped high school prospect in a generation and went first overall to his hometown Cleveland Cavaliers. Topps' 2003-04 flagship set became his most recognizable mainstream rookie issue, while Upper Deck's ultra-premium Exquisite Collection from the same season produced the patch autographs that now anchor the modern high-end market. The base Topps #221 has remained the hobby's entry point for LeBron collectors for over two decades.

How to spot a fake

  • Confirm which variant you have: base, 1st Edition, and Collection versions share card number 221, are frequently mislabeled in listings, and differ enormously in population and value.
  • Authentic 2003-04 Topps cards show sharp, non-pixelated printing and consistent gloss; check the Topps logo and copyright line on the back.
  • For Chrome refractors, genuine chromium stock shows an even rainbow shift under light; dull or blotchy finish suggests damage or a fake.
  • For anything beyond a cheap raw copy, buy slabbed and verify the certification number on the grader's official lookup before paying a premium.

Before you grade it

  • Corners and centering are the usual grade-limiters; off-center prints are common enough that you should measure before assuming Gem Mint.
  • PSA 10 supply keeps growing every year because the base card is so heavily submitted, which keeps base gem prices comparatively soft next to the 1st Edition and Chrome versions.
